Laser Dentistry Montgomeryville - Gum Lifts

Dr. Skovron keeps up to date on laser technology. This is truly an emerging field that will have a tremendous impact on how dentistry is performed in the future. We have recently added a second Laser to our Laser family. It is called the Odessey Diode Laser. With this brand new Laser, we can treat periodontal disease, do cosmetic recontouring of your gums, remove frenums, treat aphthous ulcers (canker sores), herpetic ulcers (cold sores). We can also use this Laser to do “crown lengthening” in cases where we need to remove a little gum

tissue in order to have access to good tooth structure to place a crown. This will eliminate the need to go to a periodontist or gum specialist at times. We can do all this with no pain and no bleeding. We have come a long way in dentistry!

Laser Cavity Scanner - The Easy Way to Find Decay

One of the most important things we do for our patients is to identify and remove cavities. Since even the smallest cavity can threaten the integrity of the entire tooth, finding and filling cavities is the key to preventing further problems of all kinds. Historically, that's why lengthy poking and prodding sessions have been an acceptable, if not very comfortable, part of typical dental exams. However, many people don't realize that these methods of cavity detection are only 50% to 75% successful. Cavities often hide along fissure lines, or inside biting surfaces. For all these reasons, we've invested in DIAGNODENT: a revolutionary new laser cavity scanner.

Laser Spots Cavities

DIAGNODENT technology uses a simple laser scanner to check your teeth. How? First, we aim the laser onto one of your healthy enamel tooth surfaces to give us a benchmark reading. Then, we continue on around your mouth, shining the laser into all suspect areas. This light is measured by receptors, converted to an acoustic signal, evaluated electronically to reveal a value between one and 100, then displayed on a screen. Anytime the laser encounters a surface that reads differently than the healthy baseline value, it stimulates emission of fluorescent light of a different wavelength. A reading of 10-20 indicates some enamel softening, pointing to a potential problem area that merits close monitoring. A reading of 21-100 indicates a definite area of cavity requiring a filling.

Early Detection, Precise Correction

Using DIAGNODENT technology allows us to catch more areas of Cavity sooner and with more precision. It can help prevent the spread of small cavities meaning the fillings required are simpler and shallower, preserving more of the tooth. This allows us to use minimally invasive PAIN FREE filling procedures, such as drill-free air abrasion and flow a liquid tooth colored filling into tooth.
