The many purposes of dental implants

Dental implants are a popular treatment used in restorative dentistry today. At Heritage Dental of Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, Dr. Beth Skovron and her team may recommend using these restorations to replace missing teeth. However, this can be done in multiple different ways.

How are dental implants used in the smile?

There are many ways in which implant restoration can be used to enhance and repair the smile. Below are a few different methods of restoration that include the use of dental implants:

  • Replace a single missing tooth. Implant restoration is most commonly used to replace an individual tooth that is missing or extracted. Our zirconia implants are the most popular and are placed into the jawbone to act as the natural tooth root replacement. It is then covered with a dental crown made to match the existing teeth.
  • Replace several teeth in a row. Dental bridges are a great way of replacing one or more teeth in a row, but sometimes patients may not have adjacent teeth to support the bridge. This is when a dental implant is used on one or both sides to anchor the bridge in place.
  • Full mouth dental implants. Alternatively, mini dental implants may be placed along the dental arch to hold a conservative, full denture and replace all the teeth within the arch. These are sometimes called “all-on-four” dental implants and are a wonderful alternative to keeping full dentures in place with natural suction or denture adhesives.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

To obtain dental implants, Dr. Skovron encourages patients to visit Heritage Dental for a complete, thorough evaluation to determine if dental implants are the best way to restore the smile of that individual patient. This may include dental x-rays to ensure there is enough bone in the jaw to successfully place dental implants. Dental implants stimulate bone growth through osseointegration, which helps seat the implant into the bone for optimum strength and function.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all-porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.
